Sheet Music Vendors and Publishers - Classical Guitar

Aguado

Guitar Gallery of Houston By far Houston's biggest classical guitar music store. Extensive sheet music selection, also Acoustic instruments at the store. The web site has a database with searching capability. Guitar Gallery can special order or locate classical guitar music.

Tecla Editions Home page Among the publications are the Complete Works for Guitar of Fernando Sor (1778-1839) and Complete Works of Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829). Within these editions are many hundreds of pieces including solos, duets, chamber and vocal music, ranging from virtuoso to beginners. The New Complete Works of Sor for Guitar solo and Guitar Duet is now under way; this is a completely new re-engraved edition, edited by the reputable musicologist Dr. Brian Jeffery, which is expected to become the standard edition of this composer. The Tecla catalogue also includes many works by other composers. Altogether there are about 2,000 separate compositions contained in about 300 publications. Highly recommended.

Hebe's Web The sister site to Tecla, also run by Dr. Brian Jeffery. A significant innovation in the history of the classical guitar can be found here: you can order material online as PDF format. This makes it possible to distribute a wide variety of publications that could not be economically sustained in print form. Currently, works of Sor are the primary offering, although more is coming soon.

Mel Bay Music Publishers Mel Bay has been a leading publisher of sheet music for many instruments for over 50 years, including classical guitar. Many instructional materials are offered. The web site allows you to browse their catalog. Also note that as of October 1997, Mel Bay is the North American distributor for Chanterelle Verlag (see below).

Chanterelle Verlag Music Publishers Chanterelle (Heidelberg, Germany) focuses on high-quality, authoritative guitar literature. The "Collected Editions" are usually a composer's complete works and are often not available anywhere else. Much of the standard literature is found here, such as the Barrios and Llobet recordings, the complete Sor studies, Tarrega original edition reprints, and complete works of Paganini, Llobet, Mertz, Coste, Aguado, Ferranti, Tolsa, Manjon, Regondi, and Sagreras. These editions are recommended for the serious guitarist or teacher. Distribution in the United States is now handled by Mel Bay, and is widely carried in music stores.

Editions Orphee Scholarly guitar editions that have widened the guitar literature. Other classics can be found here, such as Domingo Pratt's Dictionary of Guitarists (1935), the Regondi etudes, and Pujol's method translated to English ("Guitar School").

Free Sheet Music Locate thousands of free sheet music downloads, lessons, tips, and articles; many instruments, many musical styles.

Frets Only Mail order guitar and fretted instrument music and books. Specialists in jazz, classical, flamenco, blues, country and other styles. Over 3000 music, books, videos and CD recordings. The site address is www.fretsonly.com and includes the output of the English Ashley Mark Publishing Company. Prices are in British Pounds, but you can ship to the USA with a credit card.

Guitar Solo Publications GSP is one of the most well-known sheet music distributor and has a huge selection. Unfortunately, they do not have the full catalog on line - you have to pay to get the catalog, or call with what you're searching for. GSP is starting to issue its own brand of publications, rather than just re-selling.

Spanish Guitar Centre of Nottingham If you're unable to find an item in the USA, the Spanish Guitar Centre is a major source in England. Unfortunately, a catalog search is unavailable at the web site; you'll need to email them and pay about $18 to have their thick catalog shipped to your door. Very comprehensive selection. Expense can be high due to the exchange rates, so get a quote first, but if you can't find it elsewhere it's worth it.

Research, Free Downloads & Info

Adam Falckenhagen

First arm yourself with some utilities. If you download any music, it will probably be GIF format or EPS / PS (PostScript) format. Although PS files are by far superior to GIF in print quality, most people pass up these treasures because they lack PS software. PS files are neat and crisp, and can often be read by a print shop directly. If you want to use your own printer for PS files, you'll need software.

GSView (GhostScriptViewer) is a good program for viewing and printing PS files, and it's free! Check out Ghost Script Home Page. If you need a utility to print GIF files, PolyView is a good shareware viewer for lots of graphic formats: PolyView Home Page. The shareware version is free; to get the full version it's only $20, and well worth it.

Lime is a shareware music notation package you can download; some people I know swear by it. Lime can import MIDI files for arranging and printing; however, I found the MIDI import features somewhat clunky.

Classical Guitar Sheet Music Classical Masterpieces arranged for Classical Guitar. From Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, Offenbach, Fucik, Bartok, Lange, Chopin, etc... Search by Title or Composer..

Fine Fretted Instruments has a great deal of information on early editions, guitar composers, and history. There are many editions for sale that I have never seen anywhere else, including a reprint of Argentina's guitar music from the early 1900's, and CD's of original Barrios and Llobet recordings, as with other "golden era" products. New music, fairly extensive and hard to find, is also available. Worth checking out.

Richard Yates Transcriptions Yates is well-respected in the classical guitar community and he provides many solo and ensemble pieces for free download on his web site. Yates has published transcriptions of Chopin for Mel Bay and is a regular columnist of the GFA Soundboard magazine's transcription column. These pieces are usually on the more-challenging end of the spectrum, but there is a lot of high quality material available.

Music Archive: Sheet Music Check out the BACH section !! The 6 cello suites and 5 violin suites are free for the download. These are in Treble Clef, so they are perfectly readable on the guitar. Files are in PostScript format; many print shops can print the files, or you will need software that can print PS. Very high quality scores, incredibly neat and crisp!

The classical guitar archive Several GIF format short pieces to download.

Bach Plucked A site devoted to Bach on the classical guitar. Also links to Weiss Plucked.

Classical Guitar Illustrated History Quite a bit of guitar history listed here; good content.

Giuitar pre-1650 Excellent discussion of the guitar's evolution up to the 1800's.

19th Century Italian Guitar Index A collection of biographical information on 19th Century Italian guitar composers. Very good listing; many obscure composers are listed here. Part of the "Just Classical Guitar" web site.

Dionisio Aguado Home Page A site devoted to Aguado.

Classical Guitar Aficionados Page Lots of excellent information and links. Discography for major artists, etc..

The Classical Guitar Homepage Transcriptions, midi files, FAQ, mailing list, other links.

International Guitar Research Archives Check out the Winter 1998 Guitar Review, there's an article about the Vahdah Olcott-Bickford collection - possibly the largest collection of sheet music assembled by one individual. This music, and much more music long out of print, is archived in a database of guitar related information at this site. They work on a volunteer basis and can be hard to get a hold of (plus reprints are expensive!), so make sure you REALLY need the score before contacting them.

Musicians & Injuries It can happen to you! Poor technique and strain do not just cause poor tone; it can put a permanent stop to your playing. This site provides general advice and a listing of reference materials. Read up and be aware, but always see your doctor.

Guitar Music Theory A good basic primer on guitar music theory; link to the table of contents page.

Music Secrets: A Clarification of How Things Really Work Very good Q&A of the music learning process, practice habits, attitude, etc..
