With an unprecedented array of first prizes in major international competitions, Colombia-born Ricardo Cobo is recognized as one of the world's leading virtuosi of the new classic guitar generation. He gave his professional debut with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá at age seventeen on a nationwide telecast for an audience of over nine million. He made his astonishing debut to American audiences as the first Hispanic ever to win consecutive medals at Guitar Foundation of America Solo International Competition.
Equally in demand as chamber musician, pedagogue and recording artist, Cobo's busy touring schedule has taken him from New York's Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall to Korea's Ho Ham Hall, Los Angeles' Ambassador Auditorium, Madrid's Teatro Real, and Zaragoza's Palacio Real, to Venezuela's Teresa Carreño, and his native Colombia's National Library, among hundreds of others. At his Phillips Gallery solo debut, The Washington Post called his playing "mesmerizing...fiery...sultry...Cobo craftted note-perfect essences of beauty."
Cobo's versatility can be heard in his award-winning solo recordings of classical and children's music, his orchestral and crossover recordings, and in hundreds of credits for commercial releases worldwide. His diverse and innovative programming ranges from solo concerti with orchestra to historical chamber settings as well as Tango and Flamenco dance ensembles to Latin and world music concerts. His performance of the historic American Premiere of Leo Brouwer's Concerto de Toronto under the composer's own baton with the San Antonio Symphony was called "extrovert, lyrical and rhythmically alive...Cobo's performance was characterized by generosity of spirit, to say nothing of knockout virtuosity," added the San Antonio Express News.
Cobo has been decorated by his country on numerous occasions, recieving Colombia's "Order of Cañasgordas" and the "Order of Belacazar" for outstanding merit in cultural affairs. Ricardo Cobo currently makes his home in Las Vegas. For more information please visit him at: www.ricardocobo.com

“If any performer on any instrument has presented this work (Albeniz) with such energy and brilliance, then it has escaped my notice. A magnificent debut from a guitarist with all the hallmarks of a major world talent.” - CD Review in Classical Guitar Magazine, 2000 “Displaying mind boggling control over dynamics and tone, Adam del Monte defies physics with his expressive, romantic playing… profoundly inspiring and truly humbling.” - Guitar Player Magazine, 2000 “Adam del Monte, a man whose blinding virtuosity coupled with an agile and creative improvisatory sensibility electrifies audiences wherever he goes” - GFA Soundboard Magazine, 1998 Program: Solea
BIO: "First Prize winner at the 1997 Stotsenberg International Classical Guitar Competition, Adam del Monte studied flamenco and classical guitar in Spain, Israel, and England. Beginning with his father, flamenco artist Dino del Monte, Adam continued his training with such famed Gypsy performers as Pepe "Habichuela," Paco Cortez, Nono Miguel, and Gerardo Nunez. His classical guitar teachers were Menashe Baquiche in Israel and Gordon Crosskey at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, England. He has also appeared as both a solo artist and group performer (with his wife, acclaimed flamenco dancer Laila del Monte) in major venues such as Los Angeles's Mark Taper forum and the Wilshire Theater; the Teatro Real and the Conde Duque in Madrid; Manuel de Falla Auditorium in Granada; New Mexico St. Francis Auditorium in Santa Fe; the International guitar festival in Israel, GFA in St. Louis (1996); GFA in La Jolla (1997); and the 500th anniversary of Columbus celebrations in Paris and Madrid. Del Monte has also performed with flamenco singer Enrique Morente and the Madrid Symphony Orchestra, as well as with Lole' y Manuel. Del Monte was both influenced by and inspired the younger generation of flamenco performers who were beginning to depart from the precious virtual space of spanish flamenco. Del Monte, too, set out in new directions, integrating years of traditional and leading-edge flamenco training as well as expanding his musicianship on the classical guitar. An exlectic awareness of jazz, world music and other contemporary forms led to new, creative renditions of flamenco repertoire." - Mel Bay Web Site

Of their performances in the finals, Soundboard magazine said, "Risa Carlson played with poise, a fine silvery tone, and few if any errors…," and the San Antonio Express- News said, "Masters put her ample dexterity to good use…her control of instrumental color was exemplary." Risa and Martha began playing together in 1992 at the suggestion of their teacher, Manuel Barrueco, while studying at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. The duo (named for Erato, the muse of love poetry) quickly discovered a natural affinity, and success soon followed. They won first prize in the 1994 National Guitar Summer Workshop Competition for chamber ensembles, and were finalists in the 1994 Baltimore Chamber Music Awards. Shortly thereafter, Martha moved to Los Angeles to pursue graduate studies at the University of Southern California with Scott Tennant, while Risa continued her studies with Barrueco. In addition to competing as soloists in San Antonio, the duo performed for the Assads at the convention, rekindling their interest in performing together. Risa lives in the Baltimore area and is Chair of the guitar department of the Levine School of Music in Washington, D.C. Martha lives in Los Angeles and is on faculty at Loyola Marymount University. The two meet regularly in Baltimore or Los Angeles to rehearse. "But when Erato brushed her flowery lute, What strains of sweetness whispered in the wind! Soft as at evening when the shepherd's flute To tones of melting love alone resigned, Breathes through the windings of the silent vale; Complaining accents tremble on the gale, Or notes of ecstasy serenely roll. So when the smiling muse of Cupid sung, Her melody sighed out the sorrowing soul, Or o'er her silken chords sweet notes of gladness rung." from An Ode To Music, by James G. Percival"Two women, two guitars too superb not to love"

The Rucco and James duo will perform 19th century Italian guitar duet music (e.g. Giuliani, Gragnani) on period instruments. Based on Dr. James' stunning concert last season, we are bringing him back with his duet this year. This concert will occur at the Museum of Fine Arts with Italian wine tasting and a tour of 19th c. Italian art just for Houston Early Music and GH members. The duo of Pasquale Rucco and Douglas James specializes in performance of the guitar music of the early 19th century. Their ancient gut-strung guitars have a remarkably sweet and clear sound, bringing to life the music from the first golden age of the guitar. This ensemble's charming and refined performances have been received with standing ovations throughout North America and Europe, and is sure to surprise and delight. ". . . precise, well-balanced ensemble . . . charming and discriminating . . . " Jack Dressler, Charleston Post and Courier "Douglas James and Pasquale Rucco played original 19th century guitars with gut strings for a delightful concert of music from the same era. . . " Richard Long, Soundboard

Filipo Gragnani (1768-1820)
Antoine Baron de Barcó (17??-18??)
BIO - Pasquale Rucco: Pasquale Rucco was born in Aversa, Italy in 1959. There, he completed guitar studies under Mario Quattrocchi at the Conservatorio Domenico Cimarosa, receiving his diploma in 1986. He then studied with Angelo Gilardino at the Accademia Superiore Internazionale di Musica "Lorenso Perosi", receiving that diploma in 1988. Mr. Rucco has also completed the Corsi di Prefezionamento Internazionale di Stressa, where he participated in special courses with Carlo Barone on the performance of 19th century music, using original period instruments in both solo and chamber settings.
A musician possessed of a solid technique and refined musicality, Pasquale Rucco has given concerts
throughout Italy, Europe and the United States, including performances in Milan, Turin, Rome, Genoa,
Stockholm, and Montreal. He presented his New York debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1991. Since that time he has presented concerts and classes worldwide. In the United States, concerts and seminars on 19th century performance practice have recently taken him to colleges in Arizona, Texas, Virginia, and North and South Carolina.
BIO - Douglas James: James has appeared as a classical guitarist throughout the United States, Europe and Mexico. He has been a featured recitalist at such notable venues as Italy's L'Estate Chitarristica sul Lago Maggiore, the Great Lakes Classical Guitar Festival at Oberlin Conservatory, Charleston's Piccolo Spoleto festival, and New York's Carnegie and Merkin Halls.
In 1995 he was awarded his second National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Fellowship in recognition for his work in 19th century historical performance. In 1992 he was the top prize winner in the Arturo Toscanini Solo Guitar Competition (Italy), and received touring grants from Arts International and the Arizona Commission for the Arts.
James has served as an Artist in Residence in North Carolina and as a touring artist for the Southern Arts Federation, the Texas Commission for the Arts and the Arizona Commission on the Arts. As a radio recitalist, he has been heard on National Public Radio's Performance Today, as well as special broadcasts on the major classical stations of Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, as well as Oslo, Norway.
James serves on the music faculty of Appalachian State University.
More About the Duo & the Music: The duo of Pasquale Rucco and Douglas James specializes in performance the guitar literature of the early 19th century on authentic instruments of the period. The two met and became friends at guitar festivals in northern Italy during the early 1990's. Since that time they have performed together in the United States and Italy, charming audiences with their interpretations of music from the first true "golden age" of the guitar.
This season's program features some of the most famous of the early Romantic guitar duo repertoire. Gragnani was a protégé of the more famous Ferdinando Carulli, another Italian who made his career in Paris. The Frenchman François de Fossa composed nine guitar duos based on the works of Joseph Haydn, of which only one copy of a printed edition is known to survive today. These rarely heard arrangements are exceptional both in their musical quality and suitability for the instruments, retaining all of the classical charm of Haydn while exploiting the textures and timbres of the 19th c. guitar. Better known are the Giuliani arrangements of Rossini operatic overtures. The great Italian guitar virtuoso made these arrangements these late in his life, and probably for performance with his daughter Emilia, herself a guitarist and composer. Opera lovers (and Saturday morning cartoon fans!) will be quick to recognize the famous melodies from the overture to Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville)! Also featured will be the first performance of a newly discovered Rondeau for two guitars by Antoine Baron de Barcó, a Viennese guitarist/composer who was also an Austrian calvary officer. These works are all on the duo's first CD, which they have just released last summer.
The Italian guitarist Pasquale Rucco is the winner of several European guitar competitions, including the 1989 Arturo Toscannini Solo Guitar Competition for the performance of 19thc. music. Since then he has performed regularly in Europe and the United States, both as a soloist and chamber musician specializing in the 19thc. literature played on period instruments. Pasquale Rucco is also the founding director of "A.C.I.F.", a consortium of music academies operating in the greater Naples region.
The American guitarist Douglas James has received numerous prizes and awards, including two National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Fellowships. He performs frequently throughout the United States and in Europe, and has been featured on major classical radio broadcasts including NPR's Performance Today. This season's concerts include engagements with The Stetson International Guitar Workshop, The Memphis Guitar Society, and Appalachian Summer. Douglas James is Director of Guitar Studies and Appalachian Guitar Fest at Appalachian State University.
Douglas James will teach a master class Saturday, March 2nd at 10:30am. The venue is TBA. The performer slots are all full. You are invited to attend and observe (audit) the class. Auditing the master class is free.
Valerie Hartzell is hosting the master class. She can be reached at:

Ronn McFarlane is widely recognized as one of the world's top virtuoso lutenists.
Ronn teaches at the Peabody Conservatory and is a member of the Baltimore Consort.
He records exclusively for Dorian Recordings and has recorded three discs of
solo lute music, three lute-song albums with Julianne Baird and Frederick Urrey,
and six ensemble recordings with the Baltimore Consort.

"...a model debut from an outstanding young guitarist who gives every indication of having the capacity to build on his early success." - Classical Guitar, UK, Feb. 2000, by Paul Fowels
"The Scarlatti's stylistic flow, the elegance and fluency of the Bach, and the expressiveness of the Mertz and Barrios are excellent." - Gendai Guitar, Japan, Dec. '99
"A brilliant debut recording on the Naxos Laureate Series by Italian guitarist Franco Platino... Platino has a beautiful sound and plays with crisp articulation and sensitive phrasing. An extremely expressive player, his virtuosity is apparent but never pushed. - American Record Guide, USA, July/August 2000
"Platino demonstrated sound musicianship and Romantic 'sensibilities' and had technique to spare. His scales were outstanding, his Barrios excellent... I would go out of my way to hear [Platino] play again." - Soundboard, Spring 1998, by Richard Long
"The superb new recording by Franco Platino is full of life. His Scarlatti is bright and sparkling, his Bach shows his depth and understanding of the music, and his Rodrigo brings out his virtuosity. Franco is a brilliant young player who has reached maturity early in his life. He is an exciting new star in the guitar world." - --David Russell

Karin Schaupp Web Site

Karin Schaupp is one of the most successful and respected musicians in Australia today. At eighteen she gave her highly successful debut in Rodrigo¹s Concierto de Aranjuez with the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra. Shortly after, she premiered Phillip Bracanin¹s award-winning Guitar Concerto (which was written for her and later recorded on CD with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra).
Karin Schaupp completed her tertiary music studies at The University of Queensland with First Class Honours, a Masters degree and was also the recipient of a University Gold Medal.
She has given countless solo recitals in Australia, Europe, Asia, the US and Canada. Her debut solo CD Soliloquy (first released with Warner Music in 1997) and her second album Leyenda (released in May 1998) both proved to be classical best-sellers shortly after their Australian release. Classical Guitar Magazine (UK) praised Soliloquy as " a pace-setting performance in all respects..", while the Ottawa Citizen (Canada) described Ms Schaupp¹s playing on Leyenda, "The poetic intensity and sense of elation in her playing are truly quite special."
Karin Schaupp¹s latest album, Evocation was released a few weeks ago and has already been described as possessing expression "like that of an old master". This eagerly awaited new CD features works by guitarist composers of the 19th and 20th centuries, including a new work written for Ms Schaupp by American guitarist composer Andrew York. Ms Schaupp will spend the rest of this year playing recitals in Australia, Germany, Mexico and the US.

Stanley Yates has established a unique international career as a virtuoso performer, recording artist, teacher, and as a widely-published arranger and scholar.
Yates performs internationally and is a past prize-winner in such prestigious performance competitions as the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA).
A dedicated interpreter of new music as well as of neglected masterpieces from the past, he has reconstructed and given first modern performances of such important rediscovered works as Villa-Lobos' Valsa Concerto No. 2. Yates' new edition of the complete Bach Cello suites is a Mel Bay best seller and truly a landmark publication with high editorial and scholarly standards:

Stanley received Performer's Diplomas from Trinity College, London, and Sandown College of Performing Arts, Liverpool (where he graduated with the highest pass in the history of the college); and graduate degrees from the University of Liverpool and the University of North Texas (where he was the only non-pianist ever to receive the Morgan Dissertation Award for Excellence in Music Performance). Currently a resident of the United States, he directs the guitar program at Austin Peay State University, home of Tennessee's Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts.
"This is distinguished playing, a recording to hear and learn
from. The recording is technically excellent and Yates plays
with a refreshing confidence."
Soundboard, USA
"Far from being of interest only to those who wish to play from
Yates's transcriptions, the performances recorded here are of the
greatest relevance to all who cherish Bach...[Yates] has brought
considerable academic and cultural resources to the task. Allied
to immaculate technique, this results in a sense of commitment
and ownership rarely equalled in this repertoire. There is a kind of post-authenticity
about the playing, deeply aware of baroque practice and
historical tendencies, but focused beyond the lute or harpsichord
emulation of several accounts of Bach on the guitar...
A major landmark."
Classical Guitar, England
"...exhilarating...a superb player...a performing academic of the highest caliber - one
of an elite breed of guitarists whose playing is every
bit as impressive as his qualifications... Calm, totally efficient, controlled mastery of his
instrument..."
Classical Guitar, England
"Great authority and control..."
Guitar International, England
"...Yates at his best - poetic and rhapsodic."
