In addition, Guitar Houston has hosted many "emerging artist" series concerts featuring free recitals, or very inexpensive concerts featuring mostly local talent. These artists are selected based on the following criteria to quality for emerging artist endorsement: a university degree with a major guitar program, a successful audience audition at a public meeting, an established teaching career, and professional references. All artists require a thorough review by the highly-experienced Guitar Houston Board of Directors to assure they are of sufficient caliber to present in a recital situation.

Gypsy Passion Trio "GVA Discovery"

A favorite of our concert season, Miguel Antonio returns with his flamenco ensemble to dazzle and romance! Prior performances have brought down the house, and this year should be no exception. This trio will feature many selections from their recent CD. Stylistically, the trio is a successful blend of flamenco / gypsy, Russian, and world styles presented with virtuosity and passion. Miguel Antonio brings Spanish Flamenco guitar to the mix, while the violin and accordion bring a Russian flair and a full-sounding trio that must be heard to be believed.

"A kind of wizardry lies within (their playing) ... (a) supple, flawlessly unified sound,"
- The New York Times.

"Their performance was impeccable and powerful, ranging from the most delicate guitaristic effects to wild flights of virtuosity, all carried off with the nonchalant mastery which is their trademark. The packed hall called for and got two delightfully entertaining encores from them."
- Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society.

"The interaction of the Brazilian siblings is so precise, so perfectly synchronized, that it reaches far beyond musical partnership into a kind of creative symbiosis."

In Concert March 2001: "Ana Isabel Arnaz and Michael Craddock"

Arnaz-Craddock

Guitar Houston, Houston Early Music, and the Museum of Fine Arts present soprano
Ana Isabel Arnaz and lutenist Michael Craddock. Guitar Houston is especially proud to
welcome back Michael Craddock following his earlier successful concert season with GH.
You will not hear a finer or more historically informed performance.

The Swiss-based duo of Spanish soprano Ana Isabel Arnaz and American
lutenist Michael Craddock will be performing a concert of Spanish songs from
the 16th and 17th centuries. The program includes romances and villancicos
from the Cancionero Musical de Palacio, songs by Alonso Mudarra and Miguel
de Fuenllana, and a selection of French airs de cour which were originally
published with Spanish texts.

Ana Isabel Arnaz, soprano, is a native of Huesca (Aragón), Spain, and
graduated with honors from the Conservatorio Superior de Música del Liceo in
Barcelona. She has appeared as a soloist in works for chorus and orchestra,
including those of J. S. Bach, Vivaldi and Pergolesi, in European countries
from Spain to Norway. Miss Arnaz sings regularly with several early music
ensembles in Europe, including Les Musiciens du Paradis and Ensemble
Sepharad, and performs music from the Middle Ages to the Baroque. Her
specialty, however, is the vocal music of sixteenth-century Spain, and it is
here that the unique qualities of her voice find true expression.

Michael Craddock studied classical guitar with Thomas Johnson at the
University of North Texas, where he was the first guitarist to complete the
Doctor of Musical Arts Degree. He was also a performer in guitar master
classes of Oscar Ghiglia and José Tomás. An interest in early music
eventually led him to study the lute and related historical plucked
instruments with Hopkinson Smith at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in
Switzerland. He has performed as a soloist and member of several ensembles
in Europe and the United States. A former faculty member of Texas Christian
University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, he now lives
in Basel, Switzerland.

With an unprecedented array of first prizes in major international competitions, Colombia-born Ricardo Cobo is recognized as one of the world's leading virtuosi of the new classic guitar generation. He gave his professional debut with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá at age seventeen on a nationwide telecast for an audience of over nine million. He made his astonishing debut to American audiences as the first Hispanic ever to win consecutive medals at Guitar Foundation of America Solo International Competition.

Equally in demand as chamber musician, pedagogue and recording artist, Cobo's busy touring schedule has taken him from New York's Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall to Korea's Ho Ham Hall, Los Angeles' Ambassador Auditorium, Madrid's Teatro Real, and Zaragoza's Palacio Real, to Venezuela's Teresa Carreño, and his native Colombia's National Library, among hundreds of others. At his Phillips Gallery solo debut, The Washington Post called his playing "mesmerizing...fiery...sultry...Cobo craftted note-perfect essences of beauty."

Cobo's versatility can be heard in his award-winning solo recordings of classical and children's music, his orchestral and crossover recordings, and in hundreds of credits for commercial releases worldwide. His diverse and innovative programming ranges from solo concerti with orchestra to historical chamber settings as well as Tango and Flamenco dance ensembles to Latin and world music concerts. His performance of the historic American Premiere of Leo Brouwer's Concerto de Toronto under the composer's own baton with the San Antonio Symphony was called "extrovert, lyrical and rhythmically alive...Cobo's performance was characterized by generosity of spirit, to say nothing of knockout virtuosity," added the San Antonio Express News.

Cobo has been decorated by his country on numerous occasions, recieving Colombia's "Order of Cañasgordas" and the "Order of Belacazar" for outstanding merit in cultural affairs. Ricardo Cobo currently makes his home in Las Vegas. For more information please visit him at: www.ricardocobo.com

Selected Reviews:

"His playing was impeccable, his performance style suave...had he wanted to, he could have set the stage ablaze with burst after burst of pyrotechnics. Both his virtuosity and his need to display it were things utterly under his control."

- ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

"Apart from the pleasures of technical bravura and musicality, the concert was a garden of seldom-heard delights. Colombia-born Cobo is a dynamic player who not only digs into passages of rhythmic verve and percussive ferocity but also plays close heed to the fine points of tonal color. He is a player who lays claim to the twin virtues of passion and clarity. To boot, he's on an admirable repertoire-expanding mission."

- LOS ANGELES TIMES

"Cobo exhibits a level of confidence and facility that few guitarists possess. He executes the most difficult passages almost effortlessly, and his lightness and brilliance in fast scale passages and effervescent arpeggios was dazzling. In addition, his sound was powerful and beautiful. He played with such conviction and feeling that one simply heard music - not 'twentieth century' music."

- Guitar Review

"Cobo's tone is velvet, his technique seems to have no limitations, and his guitar can be as big and brassy or as soft and expressive as he wishes."

Adam Del Monte

BIO: "First Prize winner at the 1997 Stotsenberg International Classical Guitar Competition, Adam del Monte studied flamenco and classical guitar in Spain, Israel, and England. Beginning with his father, flamenco artist Dino del Monte, Adam continued his training with such famed Gypsy performers as Pepe "Habichuela," Paco Cortez, Nono Miguel, and Gerardo Nunez. His classical guitar teachers were Menashe Baquiche in Israel and Gordon Crosskey at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, England. He has also appeared as both a solo artist and group performer (with his wife, acclaimed flamenco dancer Laila del Monte) in major venues such as Los Angeles's Mark Taper forum and the Wilshire Theater; the Teatro Real and the Conde Duque in Madrid; Manuel de Falla Auditorium in Granada; New Mexico St. Francis Auditorium in Santa Fe; the International guitar festival in Israel, GFA in St. Louis (1996); GFA in La Jolla (1997); and the 500th anniversary of Columbus celebrations in Paris and Madrid. Del Monte has also performed with flamenco singer Enrique Morente and the Madrid Symphony Orchestra, as well as with Lole' y Manuel.

Del Monte was both influenced by and inspired the younger generation of flamenco performers who were beginning to depart from the precious virtual space of spanish flamenco. Del Monte, too, set out in new directions, integrating years of traditional and leading-edge flamenco training as well as expanding his musicianship on the classical guitar. An exlectic awareness of jazz, world music and other contemporary forms led to new, creative renditions of flamenco repertoire." - Mel Bay Web Site

DUO ERATO

In October 2000, long-time friends Risa Carlson and Martha Masters reunited at the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America International Competition in San Antonio, where both emerged as prizewinners. Of their performances in the finals, Soundboard magazine said, "Risa Carlson played with poise, a fine silvery tone, and few if any errors…," and the San Antonio Express- News said, "Masters put her ample dexterity to good use…her control of instrumental color was exemplary."

Risa and Martha began playing together in 1992 at the suggestion of their teacher, Manuel Barrueco, while studying at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. The duo (named for Erato, the muse of love poetry) quickly discovered a natural affinity, and success soon followed. They won first prize in the 1994 National Guitar Summer Workshop Competition for chamber ensembles, and were finalists in the 1994 Baltimore Chamber Music Awards. Shortly thereafter, Martha moved to Los Angeles to pursue graduate studies at the University of Southern California with Scott Tennant, while Risa continued her studies with Barrueco.

In addition to competing as soloists in San Antonio, the duo performed for the Assads at the convention, rekindling their interest in performing together. Risa lives in the Baltimore area and is Chair of the guitar department of the Levine School of Music in Washington, D.C. Martha lives in Los Angeles and is on faculty at Loyola Marymount University. The two meet regularly in Baltimore or Los Angeles to rehearse.

"But when Erato brushed her flowery lute,
What strains of sweetness whispered in the wind!
Soft as at evening when the shepherd's flute
To tones of melting love alone resigned,
Breathes through the windings of the silent vale;
Complaining accents tremble on the gale,
Or notes of ecstasy serenely roll.
So when the smiling muse of Cupid sung,
Her melody sighed out the sorrowing soul,
Or o'er her silken chords sweet notes of gladness rung."

from An Ode To Music, by James G. Percival

"Two women, two guitars too superb not to love"
By Punch Shaw
Special to the Star-Telegram

"FORT WORTH - Think of it as music for guitar four hands.

Two rising young classical guitarists, Duo Erato, brought their tag-team act to the PepsiCo Recital Hall on Thursday in an evening of plucking and strumming that was so tightly coordinated that it often seemed that the two women were playing a single instrument.

Expectations were high for this performance, given the credentials these two players -- Risa Carlson and Martha Masters -- bring to the stage. They finished first and third in the 2000 Guitar Foundation of America competition, a sort of Cliburn for the guitar (and I challenge anyone who was there to guess the winner). They both studied with one of the most respected of all guitar masters, Manuel Barrueco. And each has enjoyed success on her own.

Consider those high expectations met. The duo glided through a program that included works by Pasquini, Sor, Brahms, Piazolla, Albeniz and Rodrigo.

That reads like the usual suspects except for the Brahms -- a transcription of a movement from his String Sextet in B flat. Guitar recitals are usually rich in transcriptions from a variety of composers, but they rarely come from the Romantic era. While the piece did make the German composer speak with a vaguely Spanish accent in places, it was quite satisfying and true to its source overall.

When they played together, their contrasting styles complemented each other nicely. Carlson offers a sharp, ringing attack, Masters a softer, more blended tone.

Their duets were broken up by brief solo sets from each artist. Masters' choice was three tunes by Paraguayan composer Agustin Barrios Mangore. Her soft, richly nuanced reading of Julia Florida so thoroughly seduced the larger-than-usual audience of about 200 that they seemed to be holding their collective breath as she played.

Carlson's solo set was three works by Argentine tango great Astor Piazolla that were dispatched with appropriate sass and verve.

Finally, I suppose it is necessary to express a view as to which of these virtuosos was better. All right. The pretty one was better. And, again, I challenge anyone who was there to take a guess on that one."

James has served as an Artist in Residence in North Carolina and as a touring artist for the Southern Arts Federation, the Texas Commission for the Arts and the Arizona Commission on the Arts. As a radio recitalist, he has been heard on National Public Radio's Performance Today, as well as special broadcasts on the major classical stations of Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, as well as Oslo, Norway.

James serves on the music faculty of Appalachian State University.

More About the Duo & the Music: The duo of Pasquale Rucco and Douglas James specializes in performance the guitar literature of the early 19th century on authentic instruments of the period. The two met and became friends at guitar festivals in northern Italy during the early 1990's. Since that time they have performed together in the United States and Italy, charming audiences with their interpretations of music from the first true "golden age" of the guitar.

This season's program features some of the most famous of the early Romantic guitar duo repertoire. Gragnani was a protégé of the more famous Ferdinando Carulli, another Italian who made his career in Paris. The Frenchman François de Fossa composed nine guitar duos based on the works of Joseph Haydn, of which only one copy of a printed edition is known to survive today. These rarely heard arrangements are exceptional both in their musical quality and suitability for the instruments, retaining all of the classical charm of Haydn while exploiting the textures and timbres of the 19th c. guitar. Better known are the Giuliani arrangements of Rossini operatic overtures. The great Italian guitar virtuoso made these arrangements these late in his life, and probably for performance with his daughter Emilia, herself a guitarist and composer. Opera lovers (and Saturday morning cartoon fans!) will be quick to recognize the famous melodies from the overture to Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville)! Also featured will be the first performance of a newly discovered Rondeau for two guitars by Antoine Baron de Barcó, a Viennese guitarist/composer who was also an Austrian calvary officer. These works are all on the duo's first CD, which they have just released last summer.

The Italian guitarist Pasquale Rucco is the winner of several European guitar competitions, including the 1989 Arturo Toscannini Solo Guitar Competition for the performance of 19thc. music. Since then he has performed regularly in Europe and the United States, both as a soloist and chamber musician specializing in the 19thc. literature played on period instruments. Pasquale Rucco is also the founding director of "A.C.I.F.", a consortium of music academies operating in the greater Naples region.

The American guitarist Douglas James has received numerous prizes and awards, including two National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Fellowships. He performs frequently throughout the United States and in Europe, and has been featured on major classical radio broadcasts including NPR's Performance Today. This season's concerts include engagements with The Stetson International Guitar Workshop, The Memphis Guitar Society, and Appalachian Summer. Douglas James is Director of Guitar Studies and Appalachian Guitar Fest at Appalachian State University.

George Rochberg (b.1918) - Caprice Variations on Capriccio Op.1 No.24 by Paganini arr. Platino Francisco Tarrega (1852-1909) Reviews:

"Platino brought an unfailingly elegant sense of phrasing as well a beguiling rhythmic elasticity...All evening Platino communicated deeply with the guitar, made it sing and sigh. It's easy to understand why he has been steadily building an international solo career." - The Sun, Baltimore, MD, Feb. 2001, by Tim Smith, Music Critic

"This is one of the finest records of guitar playing I have encountered in many years. It is of star quality in every respect and, given the stylistic range and difficulty of the music, that is an accolade not to be taken lightly." - Gramophone, UK, Feb. 2000, by John Duarte

" ...Platino's virtuoso contrapuntal technique and luscious phrasing suggest he is an heir to the mantle of Segovia." - The Washington Post, USA, Feb. 28th, 2000, By L. Peat O'Neil

"Platino's playing is certainly far from ordinary... He is consistently musical and technically in command regardless of the circumstances." - Soundboard, USA, Winter 1999, by James Reid

"...a model debut from an outstanding young guitarist who gives every indication of having the capacity to build on his early success." - Classical Guitar, UK, Feb. 2000, by Paul Fowels

"The Scarlatti's stylistic flow, the elegance and fluency of the Bach, and the expressiveness of the Mertz and Barrios are excellent." - Gendai Guitar, Japan, Dec. '99

"A brilliant debut recording on the Naxos Laureate Series by Italian guitarist Franco Platino... Platino has a beautiful sound and plays with crisp articulation and sensitive phrasing. An extremely expressive player, his virtuosity is apparent but never pushed. - American Record Guide, USA, July/August 2000

"Platino demonstrated sound musicianship and Romantic 'sensibilities' and had technique to spare. His scales were outstanding, his Barrios excellent... I would go out of my way to hear [Platino] play again." - Soundboard, Spring 1998, by Richard Long

"The superb new recording by Franco Platino is full of life. His Scarlatti is bright and sparkling, his Bach shows his depth and understanding of the music, and his Rodrigo brings out his virtuosity. Franco is a brilliant young player who has reached maturity early in his life. He is an exciting new star in the guitar world." - --David Russell

PROGRAM NOTES

Leyenda: Asturias

ISAAC ALBÉNIZ
Born May 29, 1860 in Camprodón, Lérida
Died May 18, 1909 in Cambô-les-Bains

Isaac Albéniz was born in Camprodón. His exuberant talent as a pianist was obvious almost from his infancy. He gave his first concert when he was four years old. At six he studied in Paris with Marmontel for a few months. His concert was eagerly awaited and some newspapers called him the "Spanish Rubenstein." By petition of Debussy, Fauré and other distinguished composers, the French government presented Albéniz the medal of the Legion of Honor.
As a composer, he is best known for the Tango in D Major and a set of piano pieces, Iberia. Originally a work for piano, Leyenda is the composer's tribute to the Asturias region of northwest Spain: Leyenda, or "The Legend," is actually a subtitle. Like a traveling troubadour Albéniz sings of his beautiful native land, its scenery and its changing moods. The Leyenda is part of the Suite espagnole for piano with the transcription by Segovia.

Fandanguillo, Op. 36

JOAQUÍN TURINA
Born December 9, 1882 in Seville
Died January 14, 1949 in Madrid

Since Paris was a major musical Mecca in the pre-World War I era, many composers, especially Spanish composers, were drawn there to study. The French master Vincent d'Indy was the teacher of Albéniz. He was also the teacher of Joaquín Turina. In fact, it was in Paris that Turina met Albéniz. Since Albéniz was, in those years just prior to World War I, considered the leading Spanish musician of the time, he helped direct the career of the young Turina. In a meeting at a French café in 1907, Albéniz passed the so-called torch of Spanish national compositional style to the young musician. Years later, Turina recalled the meeting stating: "There I realized that music should be an art, and not a diversion for the frivolity of women and the dissipation of men. We were three Spaniards [the meeting included composer Manuel de Falla, as well] gathered together in that corner of Paris, and it was our duty to fight bravely for the national music of our country." Together they founded a modern Spanish school of composition.
Turina wrote in virtually all forms. His music is infused with nationalistic ideas and musical folklore, whose elements were later, incorporated into works full of humor and simple beauty. Showing the influence of the French impressionists, he made all use of all possible nuances and colors that can be achieved on the guitar. Fandanguillo, (little fandango) Op. 36 was completed on June 4, 1925 and dedicated to the great Spanish guitar virtuoso Andrés Segovia, and premiered by him at the Teatro de la Comedia in Madrid. A rather improvisatory piece of music, it is a highly rhapsodized variation on the triple feel of the fandango. He pulls out all the technical devices on this little piece, including pizzicato, rasgueado, harmonics, tambora and rapid scale passages. Another interesting technique is called cante hondo. It refers to the practice of tuning the E string down to D and the A string down to G resulting in the six strings being tuned to D, G, D, G, B, E, creating a very interesting sound. This beautiful little piece has become an audience favorite.

Homenaje 'Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy'

MANUEL DE FALLA
Born November 23, 1876 in Cádiz
Died November 14, 1946 in Alta Gracia, Argentina

One of the last brilliantly creative composers of the Romantic, nationalistic tradition, Manuel de Falla, is credited with contributing to the renaissance of a national Spanish school of music at the beginning of the 20th century, along with Isaac Albéniz, Enrique Granados and Joaquín Turina, all of whom based their style on the traditional popular music of their country. Early in his career, Falla (and not de Falla as he is so often wrongly referred to) studied with Felipe Pedrell, the eminent Spanish musicologist, composer and teacher, and the greatest proponent at the time of the ancient traditions of Spanish popular art and music. As a result, he seldom departed from his native origin in his compositions in which a Spanish flavor is almost always present. However, one may not overlook that a second decisive ingredient in Falla's musical style was French; in 1907, he went to Paris, where he lived for seven years and where he won the friendship and support of Dukas, Debussy and Ravel, being strongly influenced by them. Although many of his compositions are based on the popular melodies of Spanish folk music, the musical treatment is always of the highest standard, usually combining with ideas from two of the esthetic movements of his time: impressionism and neo-classicism.
Homenaje 'Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy' is the only work Falla ever wrote for solo guitar. It was composed as part of a special issue of the Revue Musicale dedicated to Debussy who had died in 1918. Other composers who contributed to this 1921 issue were Dukas, Roussel, Bartók, Stravinsky, Ravel, Satie, Goossens, Malipiero and Schmitt. The Homenaje contains rhythms characteristic of a habenera and quotations of Debussy's La eoirée dans Grenade, for piano.

Gran jota

FRANCISCO TÁRREGA
Born November 21, 1852 in Villareal, Castellón
Died December 15, 1910 in Barcelona

The Spanish composer and guitarist Francisco Tárrega paved the way for the rebirth of prominence of the guitar in the modern concert hall. He earned his living by teaching music theory and giving recitals, and by 1877 was hailed as the "Sarasate of the guitar." His career began with a brilliant concert at the Teatre de al Alhambra, after which he was invited to play for the queen of Spain, Doña Ysabel and Princess Matilde.
Tárrega was responsible for initiating the renaissance that the guitar has enjoyed throughout the world to the present day. An innovator of the guitar and its technique, Tárrega popularized and immortalized the tremolo technique that brought the third finger of the right hand into use in his Recuerdos de la Alhambra. He was a prolific writer for the guitar, with an output of more than 200 original works and transcriptions for one or two guitars. His Gran jota fully employs the characteristic melodic turns and rapid triple meter of the Aragonian dance and is a vivid example of Tárrega's touch and creative abilities.

Por tierras de Jerez

JOAQUÍN RODRIGO
Born November 22, 1901 in Valencia
Died July 6, 1999 in Madrid

Although blind from early childhood, Joaquín Rodrigo never let his disability get in the way of his passion. Like many other Spanish composers of his generation, he studied composition in Paris. Rodrigo studied with the French master Paul Dukas from 1927 until 1932, after which he traveled extensively, primarily through Switzerland, Germany and Austria. He returned home permanently at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936.
Through his close association with the Romero family, he was inspired to write many of his most famous compositions, including Concierto Andaluz for four guitars, the Concierto Madrigal for two guitars, and the Concierto para una Fiesta, which was premiered by Pepe Romero in San Antonio, Texas on March 9, 1983. Written in 1960, Por tierras de Jerez is a beautiful little piece that lasts a mere 4 minutes.

Fantasia Cubana

CELEDONIO ROMERO
Born March 2, 1913 in Malaga
Died May 8,1996 in San Diego, CA

A dance in time in which the dancer devotes full attention to the sound of the shoe against the floor is called a zapateado, or "by the shoe." In the 1940's Maestro Romero wrote a beautiful zapateado as a movement to his famous Suite Andaluza for solo guitar. In 1994 he set an obligato to this work, transforming it into a duet in which the two guitars engage in a friendly duel. © 2000 Columbia Artists Management Inc.
Pepe Romero

The Fantasía Cubana is based on the songs of the guajiros cubanos [Cuban peasants] that embedded themselves in Celedonio Romero's soul when he heard them as a child. His father (who was an engineer) on one of his many foreign trips had designed the harbor of Cienfuegos, Cuba. In the afternoons he used to take Celedonio for walks in the beautiful Cuban countryside with its great fields of corn and sugar cane. There the peasants sang of love at the end of their daily chores and, as the moon came out, they danced with their girls and sang guajiras.

SAFFIRE (The Australian Guitar Quartet) ARIA winners back with new album NOSTÁLGICA and on the road for an extensive national tour.

Coming together in early 2003 for a one-off performance, four individually acclaimed guitarists agreed to form a permanent ensemble in between their own busy recording and performing schedules - Saffire was born.

Saffire is Australia's highest selling classical group.

Its debut self-titled album won the ARIA Award for Best Classical Album and an extensive national touring schedule, coupled with a massive media profile have earned the group something quite rare for classical musicians - the status of pop stars!

Testimony to the impact of this collaboration came by way of critical acclaim and public enthusiasm which resulted in the debut CD storming to the number 1 position of the ARIA Classical Chart in only the second week in the market.

With their new album Nostálgica, Slava Grigoryan, Karin Schaupp, Gareth Koch and Antony Field present another breathtaking and eclectic array of works that stretch the boundaries for guitar ensembles.

The music ranges from a fiery arrangement of Deep Purple's classic Highway Star, to Riverdance and Celtic folksong (She Moved Through the Fair, The Salley Gardens), tangos and rumbas and the world premiere recording of a new work called Six Fish by Nigel Westlake, written specially for Saffire.

The extensive national tour in support of the new album presents a great opportunity to hear the passion and beauty of four of Australia's finest and most respected classical guitarists in one very special performance. Not to be missed!

The members of Saffire - The Australian Guitar Quartet are four of the most successful and talented guitarists that Australia has produced - Gareth Koch, Karin Schaupp, Slava Grigoryan, and Leonard Grigoryan.

In June 2003 Saffire released their debut CD with ABC Classics. This self-titled album, Saffire, soared to Number One on the Australian Classical Music Charts within days of its release, and in November 2003, Saffire won the Australian Record Industry Award (ARIA) for Best Classical Album.

The quartet has toured extensively throughout Australia, playing major concert venues and appearing in live radio broadcasts. Their forthcoming Touring Schedule includes many performances Australia wide, as well as the group's first performances in Europe. Saffire's performances are characterised by spontaneity and a joy in music making, combined with a striving for perfection, which four established soloists bring to an ensemble.

Saffire is committed to the performance and development of new music. The ensemble has already commissioned works by Australian composers Nigel Westlake, Elena Kats-Chernin, Mark Isaacs, Phillip Houghton and Richard Charlton.

The instruments normally played by Saffire are three standard classical guitars and an eight-string guitar. New compositions for the group also include flamenco, national resophonic (dobro), steel-string, twelve-string, and octave guitars. Plans for 2005-2006 include extensive touring in Australia, Japan, the USA and Europe.
